Regionally, Phuket was the second best island in Asia after Bali. Koh Samui and Koh Tao were ranked third and fourth respectively.

Thailand expects tourism to generate revenues of 15 billion baht (US$428.08 million) during the three-day Songkran festival, some 10 percent more than last year, the country’s tourism minister said on the eve of the water festival.

Sometimes referred to as the world’s biggest water fight, the festival marks the beginning of Thailand’s traditional New Year and is a major tourist attraction, and a time when Thais visit family and perform religious purification ceremonies.

Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said 495,000 foreign tourists will visit Thailand during the festival, which starts on Wednesday and ends on Friday.

“About 15 billion baht (US$428.08 million) will circulate during Songkran,” Kobkarn told reporters. “This is around 10 percent more than last year.”

This year authorities are calling for restraint during the festival to help conserve water as Thailand faces its worst drought in decades.

That hasn’t stopped revellers from taking part in the festivities which have already kicked off in parts of the country.

International tourist arrivals in 2016 are expected to hit a record high of 32 million compared with 29.88 million last year.

However, banks in major shopping malls will only be closed on Wednesday and reopen as normal on Thursday and Friday.

Local consulate offices will also be closed throughout the festival period, but will be available to answer emergency phone calls.

Drinking ‘in moderation’ on beach still ok, says Patong police chief

Phuket police have said drinking beer on Patong Beach is still permitted, despite recent rumors that booze had been banned.

The Phuket News reported that although some beachgoers said vendors had told them there was a new ban on alcohol, Kathu Police Chief Col Chaiwat Uikum said drinking “in moderation” on the beach was acceptable.

“Selling alcohol on public land — including the beach — is illegal, but we will not take any action against people drinking alcohol in moderation on Patong Beach,” he said.

One beachgoer had previously told the newspaper: “Two vendors on the beach told us that they were not allowed to sell alcohol anymore.

“They said the military had ordered the ban and that anyone found drinking alcohol on the beach would be arrested and fined.”

The unnamed beachgoer said the beach rules were unclear, with some regulations enforced rigidly and others less so.

“Tourists are not sure what we can do — and cannot do — anymore. It’s terrible, as this can stop a lot of people from coming to Phuket,” he said.

Chakri Memorial Day

Thais enjoy a public holiday, Wednesday, 6 April, just a week ahead of the popular Songkran festival, 13 to 15 April.

Chakri-Mem-Day-2016-page

Both are public holidays for government, banks and commercial sector.

The country celebrates Chakri Memorial Day, Wednesday, 6 April, to honour the nine kings who have ruled Thailand under the present Chakri Dynasty.

The first king in the Chakri Dynasty, Rama I, founded the capital in Bangkok. The current ruler, His Majesty the King, Bhumibol Adulyadej, is the world’s longest reigning monarch. His reign commenced 9 June 1946.

Officially three days, the Songkran festival gets underway a week later, 13  April and ends 15 April. Savvy travel planners who take leave from work on Monday and Tuesday (11 and 12 April) can enjoy a nine-day break by the time the Songkran holiday-week runs out its course on Sunday 17 April.

The three-day holiday prompts a massive exodus of Bangkok residents who return to their rural homes to spend the holiday with their families and friends. However, it usually extends to five or seven days when the nearest weekend is included.

Phuket to get two of eight new marinas planned for the south

Posted on April 4th, 2016

Two new marinas are to be built in Phuket as part of the government’s plan to stimulate economic growth by turning Thailand into a marine leisure hub in the ASEAN region.
marinaThe marina development plan, announced by Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, includes construction of eight new marinas – four in the Andaman Sea and four in the Gulf of Thailand – to service large yachts, including superyachts, along coastal areas in five provinces: two in Phuket; two in Phang Nga; two at Koh Samui; one in Chonburi and another in Trat.

“These new marinas will stimulate economic growth throughout the region, especially in the tourism sector,” said Mr Arkhom.

The two marinas planned for Phuket are the Asian Marina in Rassada and the Kung Bay Marina in Pa Khlok, the latter being the larger of the two, and deep enough to handle superyachts.

Covering 24 rai, the Asian Marina is relatively small. Its capacity is limited to handling smaller yachts due to the marina’s depth of just five meters.

The larger Kung Bay Marina covers 108 rai and has a depth of eight meters, making it suitable for superyachts.

The government is currently negotiating with local land owners to secure long-term leases on the numerous parcels of land in each area tagged for the marina projects, confirmed a ministry source.

“Construction of the Kung Bay Marina in Phuket is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2017. However, much will depend on when environmental impact assessments are complete. Once construction is underway, though, the marina should take about one year to complete,” he said.

“A start date for construction of the Asian Marina has not yet been set, as negotiations are ongoing with local land owners, as well as with potential investors. It could mean that construction may not begin for another two years,” said the source.

All eight of the new marinas are to be built on private land, confirmed Mr Arkhom.

“In Phang Nga, the Aqua Star Marina covers 20 rai in Tai Muang, about 37 kilometers from Phuket International Airport. The berth depth there is 3-5 meters. Further north, the Ban Bangchan Marina in Takuatung covers 200 rai. Its berths also have a depth of 3-5 meters,” said Mr Arkhom.

On the gulf side, the marinas at Koh Samui are more shallow. Mai Gan Cape Marina comprises 37 rai at Laem Mai Kaen with berth depths between 1.5 and 3.5 meters. The Tong-Tanode Bay Marina is smaller, between 15 and 25 rai, and about the same depth.

“Laem Tien Port in Chonburi is 30km from Pattaya and 180km from Bangkok. The water depth there is 5-6m.

“Ban Laem Sok in Trat province is the smallest of the new marinas, covering just seven rai near Koh Kood. The water depth has not yet been established,” he said.

Mr Arkhom said that the transport ministry expected to attract domestic and foreign investment by offering investment opportunities with the marina projects.

“A budget has not yet been set, as the costs of each project have to be evaluated beforehand. Budget allocation depends upon the results of the environmental impact assessment reports,” he said.

Building the marinas, as well as reviewing the laws and regulations regarding foreign superyachts in Thai waters, involves collaboration between numerous departments, said the minister.

“The Marine Department, Customs Department, Revenue Department, and the Immigration Bureau are also involved in the process. We are making progress. However, some of the rules governing foreign-registered superyachts may have to be revised,” he said.

Phuket beach makes cut for best in the world

Kata Noi Beach wiggled its way into the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards for best beaches in the world this year.
Thailand_Phuket_Kata_Noi_Beach_view_from_South_0052_1

The west-coast beauty spot ranked third best in Asia while Nai Harn Beach was awarded 6th place. Not too far behind Phuket were Phra Nang Beach and Railey Beach – both in Krabi.

Kata Noi was also awarded first place in the “Top Ten Beaches – Thailand’ category, followed by Nai Harn Beach in second place.

“We know travellers around the globe love sun and sand vacations, so we’ve tapped the TripAdvisor community to help us identify the world’s best beaches,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor.

“The 2016 Travelers’ Choice Beaches award-winners will inspire many to book their next getaway, knowing that these beautiful spots are the very best from the TripAdvisor global community!”

The top beach in the world was Grace Bay, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. The place was described as: “Unbelievably clear, clean water with hundreds of shades blues and greens and white sugar sand beaches – ahhhhh!”

Making the top 10 cut was Thailand’s neighbor, Myanmar, which saw Ngapali Beach skate in at number 8. In striking contrast to Phuket beaches, Ngapali Beach was described as: “Three kilometers of beach without a soul to be seen. No seashells, no rocks, no vendors!”

Though Kata Noi made the list, TripAdvisor seemed to struggle to find what distinguishing features warranted the ranking, describing it as a place where the “waves and water like baby bear’s porridge: not too hot or cold, not too big or small. Simply perfect in every way. Really.”

“I was not aware of the ranking. However, I am very glad to hear our beach ranked among the most beautiful in the world,” said Karon Mayor Thawee Thongcham. “I am grateful to everyone involved in recognizing the beauty of our beach. As Kata Noi is one of the best beaches in the world, I would like to call on tourists and locals to join together and help us protect this national treasure.” – See more at: http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket-news/Phuket-beach-makes-cut-best-the-world/63589#ad-image-0

Thailand arrivals hit 6 million

Posted on March 22nd, 2016

Ministry of Tourism and Sports reports international arrivals to Thailand passed the 6 million mark, an improvement of 15.48% during January to February, this year.

Released last week, the ministry’s data showed the country attracted 6,090,203 visits during the first two months of this year compared to 5,273,791 visits during the same period last year.

Based on Immigration Bureau’s head count of people passing through passport checks at all border checkpoints (land, air and sea) the total does not identify visits for the purpose of tourism.

Association of Thai Travel agents reported just over 1 million visitors travelled on packages handled by its member companies January to February. They entered the country through Bangkok’s two airports.

ATTA has no record of clients entering the country at other gateway airports such as Phuket, Samui or Chiang Mai. Phuket would be substantial due the volume of direct flights to the island destination.

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said she was encouraging tour operators to pay more attention to ASEAN tourists, this year, to balance business in case there was a recession in China.

“This year, ASEAN tourists could grow to 7 million visits, which would be close to the volume of Chinese tourist arrivals, while the European market, especially Russia, is expected to improve significantly this year.”

The minister also suggested tour operators should tap new markets such as the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to expand business opportunities.

In February alone, visits recorded at border checkpoints reached 3,088,876, an increase of 15.96% over 2,663,650 during the same month last year.

Brunei was the only decline market in the region to show a decline (5.77%).

Africa showed an increase of 16.09% from 8,860 to 10,286 visits. The main market South Africa improved 9.53% from 3,370 to 3,691.
