Thailand expects record tourist arrivals in 2016

Posted on January 6th, 2016

International tourist arrivals in Thailand are expected to reach a record high in 2016, the tourism minister said on Wednesday, after nearly 30 million foreigners came to its temples, beaches and bars in 2015.

o-THAILAND-TOURIST-FEE-facebook

Tourism boomed even after the deadliest attack on Thai soil in peacetime at a shrine in central Bangkok shook the country and as a high profile trial for the murder of two British backpackers sullied the industry’s reputation.

Tourism accounts for about 10 percent of Thailand’s GDP and is one of the few bright spots for an economy that underperformed peers in Southeast Asia.

Visitors to Thailand should rise to 32 million in 2016, said Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, emphasising that it was not a target but an estimate. That would be more than 7 percent higher than the 29.88 million that visited in 2015.

The government is targeting revenue from tourism of 2.3 trillion baht (41.64 billion pound) in 2016, up from 2.21 trillion baht in 2015, she said.

Around 60 to 70 percent of travellers are repeat visitors, she said.

The country providing the most tourists to Thailand was China, with around 8 million in 2015. Malaysia came in a distant second with more than 3 million, and Japan, third with 1.4 million.

Thailand’s central bank predicts the economy will grow 3.5 percent this year, due to government stimulus measures and tourism.

Surging forward: Phuket International Boat Show championing Phuket

Posted on January 5th, 2016

The Phuket International Boat Show opening on Thursday (Jan 7) lines up millions of dollars of boats and luxury products on display at Royal Phuket Marina. Since its launch 13 years ago, the show has developed into a key marine event in Asia, marketing Phuket, Thailand and Asia to the world, and today is the longest running marine and lifestyle show in Southeast Asia.
Phuket_Boat_Show_Cruising_In Phuket

A solid track record of business at and after the expo has put the event at the top of the list for boat dealers, brokers, marine, luxury and lifestyle products exhibitions to be at.

The boat show, however, is more than just sales.

“The Phuket International Boat Show is a platform for business and marketing. Every year at the show exhibitors have announced sales and over the the past 12 years sales at the show, and sales resulting from leads made at the show, runs into the hundreds of millions of dollars for sure,” said Andy Dowden, Managing Director of Andaman Marine Consultants, organiser of the Phuket International Boat Show.

“Understandably the goal of most exhibitors is to sell products and make new business leads, however, my goal as organiser is much more and I’m proud that the show has become an unrivalled tool to promote Phuket and Thailand, and its marine tourism industry.

“Over the last 13 years we have spread the word far and wide, have spent millions developing not just the show but also the image of Phuket as a world-class marine tourism destination,” he added.

In 2015, the Phuket International Boat Show welcomed more than 5,000 visitors over its four days and independent visitor analysis showed that 40% of those were visitors from overseas, many of which were visiting Phuket specifically for the show.

The show’s contribution to room revenues around the island is something often overlooked. As is the role of the boat show in positioning Phuket as a business and events destination.

“We have worked closely with the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) for many years. TCEB’s goal is to promote Phuket and Thailand as a destination for business and events, and they can see the valuable role the Phuket International Boat Show has played in helping to position Phuket as such,” commented Mr Dowden.

“In addition to the lifestyle and tourism side of Phuket, the island is a key business destination and is host to more and more international events.”

TCEB statistics show that Business Tourism is an important sector for Thailand’s tourism industry with length of stay for business travellers approximately 5.6 days per person, per trip, while spending per person per day is approximately B20,000 or B108,000 per person, per trip.

“Phuket hosts more than 1,000 MICE (Meetings, Incentives,Conventions, Exhibitions) events each year and welcomes more than 100,000 international business travellers each year,” explained Mr Dowden.

“The Phuket International Boat Show is a unique example of how Phuket’s prime leisure facilities and marine tourism can combine with business to produce Southeast Asia’s largest marine and luxury lifestyle show, and the longest running show of its kind in the region,” he added.

German LCC starts flying to Thailand

Posted on December 21st, 2015

Eurowings, Germany’s low-cost leisure carrier, has launched its first flights to Thailand.

eurowings

The first new direct route from Cologne-Bonn Airport to Phuket departed on Friday, while the second route to Bangkok took off from Germany on Sunday.

Eurowings, which is a subsidiary of Lufthansa, will now operate both routes twice a week using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft with 310 econony class seats. Despite being an LCC, Eurowings aircraft will provide all passengers within-flight entertainment.

Eurowings is advertising one-way fares from EUR200 (US$217) for the Bangkok route and from EUR220 for the Phuket service, and said the inaugural Phuket flight on Friday was fully booked.

“As of today, we’re continuing to round out the Eurowings long-haul programme with a total of two new destinations in Asia,” said Oliver Wagner, a member of Eurowings management. “We’re already able to offer a highly attractive range at very competitive prices and we’ll be expanding this significantly again in the coming months. This means that Eurowings is well-positioned not just for European travel but also for long-haul destinations.”

The Bangkok flights will depart Cologne-Bonn Airport every Wednesday and Sunday, with the return flights then departing Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport every Thursday and Monday. On the Phuket route, the outbound flights will depart Cologne-Bonn every Monday and Friday and the return flights leave Phuket every Tuesday and Saturday.

The launch of flights to Thailand marks the latest stage of Eurowings’ long-haul expansion. The airline has already started flying to destinations in Cuba and the Dominican Republic, and its inaugural flights to Dubai also launched late last week.

These new routes become the first low-cost flights between Europe and Southeast Asia since AirAsia X suspended its flights from Kuala Lumpur to London and Paris in 2012.

According to the UNESCO statement, released late last week, there are 47 cities from 33 countries designated as new members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

The results bear witness to the Network’s enhanced geographical representation with 22 cities from countries not previously represented, according to UNESCO general director, Irina Bokova.

“The UNESCO Creative Cities Network represents an immense potential to assert the role of culture as enabler of sustainable development.”

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network is categorised into seven creative fields: crafts and folk art; design; film; gastronomy; literature; media arts; and music.

Thailand’s Phuket was recognised under the gastronomy category.

Launched in 2004, the Network now comprises 116 cities worldwide. It aims to foster international cooperation with and between cities committed to investing in creativity as a driver for sustainable urban development, social inclusion and cultural vibrancy, the UNESCO said.

China base rakes in FIT market for Phuket

Posted on December 15th, 2015

It is easy to get caught up with how the hospitality industry in Phuket should adjust to a shift in source markets toward a dependency on China. But what is forgotten is that it’s not just Phuket – it’s a worldwide phenomenon that requires the industry to adopt new marketing strategies and platforms.
baidu

“Chinese outbound travel is a key part of the future of tourism globally. It’s a size argument – 16 per cent of the world’s population. Chinese travellers have unique travel needs, language requirements and booking preferences,” explains Mark Simmons, vice president of sales and marketing-Asia Pacific for Outrigger Resorts.

“As an operator, you need to get close to them, understand them and meet their travel aspirations. We aim to satisfy Chinese traveller needs with unique Outrigger experiences bringing local hospitality with our world-renowned host welcoming. Our team of Chinese market experts with an international outlook help us to do that.”

With 40 resorts globally, one way Outrigger is achieving market growth in the free, independent traveller (FIT) Chinese segment is by having a China-based office specializing in sales, marketing and public relations.

“You need local experts with connections and full Chinese-language capabilities. It is a necessary investment that we have made strategically, looking long term. A major investment was the development of our dedicated Chinese-language website that, importantly, is hosted and marketed in China. This is a critical tool to have,” Mr Simmons points out.

China’s ‘voracious appetite’ for outbound travel – well chronicled since the late 90s – was a key indicator that led to the China office being set up in Beijing a number of years ago, explains Mr Simmons. The office also covers key markets in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

Such a large investment makes sense for Outrigger Resorts, as it’s a global brand. However, many boutique and family-run hotels and resorts in Phuket don’t have the same available resources.

Nonetheless, the Chinese market, especially as it becomes more discerning, fragmented and experimental, can bolster numbers during the traditional low season, as well as the Chinese ‘Golden Week’ and Chinese New Year, both of which see Chinese arrival numbers to the island spike.

“Costs needn’t be excessive. They could hire dedicated online marketing campaigns in consultation with a Chinese digital marketing company. Boutique hotels can put their room inventory on leading Chinese travel agency sites, such as Baidu and Ctrip,” Mr Simmons says.

“They can hire an agency to run campaigns for their boutique hotel on Chinese social media platforms such as WeChat, Weibo, Youku and Tencent. The key is to have a local China based partner for distribution.”

All indicators point toward the fact that the rapidly maturing market can’t be ignored. Despite the softening of the Chinese economy, the number of Chinese visitors to Phuket increased by 12 per cent in the first half of 2015 and Ctrip forecasts a 20 per cent increase in Chinese travellers to Phuket in 2016, Mr Simmons says.

“While you will still see group tours, the future is all about catering to independent Chinese travellers who want unique experiences, nature trips, innovative dining, self drive discoveries, romantic honeymoons or special meetings, if they are business travellers,” Mr Simmons says.

“They want holidays tailored to their personal needs. A fast growing segment is Meetings, Incentives and Conventions [MICE]. This led Outrigger to invest in the development of a brand new Ballroom that opened earlier in 2015 and is already attracting great interest from Chinese operators.”

What most hotels are already aware of is that it is essential to have a Chinese-speaking guest relations officer, as well as menus, signage and in-room television entertainment.

Of course, without a China-based office or China-focused marketing strategy, such investments might be putting the cart before the horse.

“The higher-end Chinese market comprises 20 per cent of the business at the Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort, and, including Hong Kong, a similar level at Outrigger Laguna Phuket Resort and Villas. It is at a similar level at Outrigger in the Maldives and rapidly growing at Outrigger Resorts in Mauritius, Hawaii, Fiji and Guam,” Mr Simmons says.

“Our Beijing office is our bridge and main driving force into the Chinese market. Without it, our Chinese business would not be what it is today.”

Grand opening of Phuket airport expansion slated for May

Posted on December 14th, 2015

The highly-anticipated expansion of the Phuket International Airport will be celebrated with a grand opening in May, confirmed the airport director.

airport

“We are now 83.69 per cent done. There will be an additional 10 bays and four aerobridges,” explained Phuket International Airport Director Monrudee Gettuphan on Wednesday.

A soft opening of the 5.7-billion-baht expansion will be held on Valentine’s Day following two trial phases to be completed in the next two months. The opening, however, will only be for the extension – not any other facilities or renovations.

“We are doing what is necessary to ensure everything runs perfectly,” Ms Monrudee said.

In May, all international flights will be moved to the new terminal. Following the move, further renovations will be made to the old terminal so that it can better cater to domestic flights.

The expansion was originally slated to be complete midway through this year, but a number of difficulties faced by contractors – including heavy monsoon rains – caused the project to be pushed back.

Due to the delays the 12.5-million-passenger capacity of the newly-expanded airport will be bulging at the seams with arrivals projected to be at about 13.6mn next year. About 12.5mn people will have arrived at the airport this year, dwarfing the airport’s current capacity of 6.5mn passengers.
